The president gave the first of two commencement addresses this year at Howard University.
PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN
President Joe Biden stated that racism "has long torn us apart" and that American history "has not always been a fairy tale" to graduates of a prestigious historically Black university on Saturday.
FAIRY TALE
In his speech, Biden discussed the Charlottesville, Virginia, white nationalist rally in 2017, which he has claimed inspired him to run for president in 2020. Hate “never goes away” and “silence is complicity,” Biden said.
SPEECH
A key part of Biden's 2020 campaign was to "redeem the soul of this nation," and he recently declared that he will run for re-election in 2024. Biden said he came to Howard to "continue the work to redeem the soul of this nation." He told the graduates they feed his optimism for the future.
