Mona Lisa Protest: Protesters Throw Soup at Mona Lisa in “Food for Thought” Stunt, Viral Video

Should Museums Brace for More Daring Environmental Protests?

Mona Lisa Protest: The incident occurred on Sunday, January 28th, 2024, around 10am local time. The two protesters, clad in black, approached the Mona Lisa and quickly threw bottles of soup onto the protective glass before ducking behind a barrier. Videos of the event show the demonstrators shouting slogans about the importance of sustainable food production and the right to a healthy diet.

“What is more important: art or the right to a healthy and sustainable diet?” one protester is heard asking.

Following the incident, the Louvre Museum evacuated the Salle des Etats room where the Mona Lisa is housed. However, the room has since been reopened. The museum has condemned the act of vandalism and has filed a complaint with the authorities.

Riposte Alimentaire has taken responsibility for the protest, claiming it was intended to draw attention to the unsustainable practices of the food industry and the plight of those struggling with hunger in France. The group is calling for the integration of food into the general social security system.

“We are not against art,” a spokesperson for Riposte Alimentaire said in a statement. “We are against a system that prioritizes profit over people and planet. We believe that everyone deserves access to healthy and sustainable food.”

The incident has sparked debate around the world about the ethics of protest and whether targeting art is ever justified, even if it doesn’t cause physical damage. Some argue that such actions are necessary to draw attention to important issues, while others believe they are disrespectful and counterproductive.

This is not the first time the Mona Lisa has been targeted by protesters. In 2009, a woman threw a ceramic cup at the painting, and in 2022, a visitor smeared frosting on the protective glass. The painting itself was also stolen in 1911, although it was later recovered.

The Mona Lisa is arguably the most famous painting in the world, and it is no stranger to controversy. This latest incident is sure to add another chapter to its long and storied history.
